Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is one of the most commonly performed procedures in facial plastic and oculoplastic surgery. In recent years, both upper and lower eyelid surgery have become increasingly popular among patients seeking a more refreshed appearance and improved eye comfort.
As we age, the skin around the eyes naturally loses firmness and elasticity. This often leads to sagging skin, fine lines, and wrinkles. Over time, fatty tissue may shift forward beneath the skin, resulting in visible bulges commonly known as bags under the eyes. Excess skin on the upper eyelids can also limit the field of vision and affect spatial awareness. Additional symptoms may include eyelid swelling, watery eyes, or a burning sensation.
For many patients, blepharoplasty offers not only aesthetic improvement, but also functional and medical benefits.
Eyelid surgery helps rejuvenate the eye area, restore proper eyelid function, and reduce the appearance of tired or heavy-looking eyes.
Who is blepharoplasty suitable for?
Blepharoplasty is suitable for both women and men. It is most frequently performed in patients over the age of 40; however, individuals with functional difficulties or a genetic predisposition may benefit from eyelid surgery at a younger age.
Good overall health is essential for a successful outcome. Before the procedure, patients undergo a preoperative medical assessment and an initial consultation with the surgeon. During this consultation, the surgeon will evaluate your condition, confirm whether blepharoplasty is appropriate for you, and explain the procedure in detail.
How is blepharoplasty performed?
Blepharoplasty is performed under local anaesthesia and typically takes 30–40 minutes. The procedure is carried out on an outpatient basis, allowing you to return home the same day, accompanied by another person.
Following surgery, a calm recovery regime is recommended. Keeping the upper body elevated helps reduce swelling, and cold compresses should be applied regularly to the eye area. Stitches are usually removed within 5–7 days.
For the first four weeks, patients are advised to avoid physical exertion, sports, bending forward, and activities that increase pressure, in order to minimise swelling. For approximately three months, sauna use, sun exposure, and tanning beds should also be avoided.
At MY CLINIC, blepharoplasty is performed by experienced ophthalmologist as. MUDr. Renata Ženíšková.
