Hymenotomy
(hymenectomy)
This is a minor surgical procedure in which the hymen is removed or torn/disturbed. This membrane partially covers the vaginal entrance and varies in shape and thickness. If it covers the entire vaginal opening or is unusually thick or rigid (a non-perforated hymen), it can cause severe pain during intercourse and menstrual bleeding.
A hymenotomy is an effective solution for women who suffer from these problems associated with the hymen. The aim of this relatively simple procedure is to allow normal menstrual blood to drain or to improve the woman's sex life (or both), resulting in a significant improvement in quality of life.
Based on the surgeon's assessment of the specific case, either a small incision is made using surgical instruments or part of the hymenal tissue is removed. The surgeon ensures precision and minimal damage to the surrounding tissues. The procedure itself takes only a few minutes.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, in some cases under general anaesthesia.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and the patient can leave the clinic after resting for a while. Mild pain or discomfort can usually be relieved with common analgesics.
The recovery period is not long, with healing usually complete within two weeks after the procedure. It is advisable to follow hygiene guidelines to prevent infection and to avoid physical exertion and sexual intercourse for several days to weeks (as directed by the treating physician).
