Arthroscopy of the shoulder (ASK)
These days, arthroscopy is a relatively common orthopaedic operation. It is used to diagnose and treat injured or otherwise damaged intra-articular structures. It is a minimally invasive method, i.e. the shoulder joint is accessed through small incisions around the circumference of the shoulder. This minimizes scarring and reduces the risk of infection and pain, leading to faster rehabilitation and earlier return to normal activities. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia.
The following arthroscopic surgery most often performed in the shoulder area: treatment/sewing of the rotator cuff muscles, treatment of the biceps tendon, stabilization of the shoulder due to dislocation, removal of adhesions or painful calcium deposits around the joint, restoration of movement in a "frozen" shoulder, cleaning out inflammatory tissues.
