Chalazion Removal (Meibomian Cyst)

A chalazion is a painless or mildly tender lump on the eyelid caused by a blocked oil (meibomian) gland. If conservative treatment such as warm compresses, ointments, or eye drops is not effective, surgical removal of the chalazion may be recommended.

How a Chalazion Develops

A chalazion forms when the duct of a meibomian (oil) gland in the eyelid becomes blocked. Oil that would normally be released onto the surface of the eye starts to accumulate inside the gland. This leads to enlargement of the gland, an inflammatory reaction, and the formation of a firm lump.
If the gland does not clear spontaneously, the chalazion may persist for several weeks or recur repeatedly.

Diagnosis

A chalazion is a localised eyelid lump caused by blockage of a meibomian gland. It may be painless or sensitive to touch. Diagnosis is made through a clinical ophthalmological examination.

Symptoms
  • swelling or a lump on the eyelid

  • sensation of pressure

  • mild tenderness or discomfort

  • redness of the eyelid

  • in some cases, blurred vision caused by pressure on the cornea

Causes
  • blockage of oil gland ducts

  • chronic eyelid inflammation (blepharitis)

  • increased production of skin oil

  • recurrent chalazia in patients with atopic conditions or rosacea

Surgery

The procedure is performed either from the inside or outside of the eyelid, depending on the size and location of the chalazion. After a small incision, the contents are removed and the area is cleaned. A compression dressing is applied; stitches are usually not required.

Follow-up care/treatment
  • cold compresses during the first few days after the procedure

  • application of prescribed eye drops or ointment

  • avoid make-up around the eyelid area for 5–7 days

  • mild restriction of physical activity for 3–5 days
