Excision of Small Skin and Mucosal Lesions of the Eyelids

The outpatient removal of small benign eyelid lesions such as cysts, papillomas, and fibromas takes approximately 10 minutes. The lesion is removed together with its base in order to minimise the risk of recurrence.

How These Lesions Develop

Small benign eyelid lesions most commonly arise as a result of natural changes in the skin or mucous membrane. These are non-cancerous growths caused by excessive cell proliferation, which may occur due to chronic irritation, tissue ageing, or minor local infections.

Some types of lesions, such as papillomas, may be associated with viral infection, while others develop spontaneously without a clearly identifiable cause. In most cases, the lesions grow gradually and may begin to cause mechanical discomfort.

Diagnosis

These are benign growths originating from the skin or mucosal lining of the eyelid. Diagnosis is usually made clinically during an ophthalmological examination. In certain cases, histological analysis may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis.

Symptoms
  • cosmetically disturbing lesions

  • mechanical irritation of the eye

  • discomfort during blinking

  • sensation of “grit” or a foreign body in the eye

  • excessive tearing

Causes
  • excessive proliferation of skin cells

  • chronic irritation

  • age-related skin changes

  • local infections (in some types of papillomas)

Surgery

After local anaesthesia, the lesion is removed using a fine surgical incision. Sutures are usually not required for small lesions. If histological verification is indicated, the removed tissue is sent for laboratory analysis.
