Inguinal, femoral or umbilical hernia surgery for children
It involves the removal of hernias that arise due to the prolapse of the contents of the abdominal cavity through a weakened part of the abdominal wall. In children, inguinal hernias are more common than femoral or umbilical or femoral hernias.
The most common of these hernias in children, inguinal hernias, occur due to a congenital developmental disorder affecting the inguinal canal. The peritoneal protrusion into the scrotum remains in the inguinal canal after the testicle has descended and abdominal cavity contents may become trapped or even strangulated in this protrusion.
A bulge in the groin or navel that is enlarged after crying, coughing or exertion. If the trapped body parts are strangulated, the bulge is stiff and painful.
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia in a supine position and takes 30-40 minutes. The surgeon locates the hernia sac, opens it, moves the contents of the hernia back into the abdominal cavity, removes the hernia sac and, if necessary, reinforces the weakened area with sutures to prevent recurrence. The wound is closed with absorbable sutures that fall out in about three weeks.
