Treatment of condylomata
(anogenital warts)
Condylomata are warty growths on the skin that can range in size from a few millimeters to tens of centimeters. Their incidence has risen dramatically in recent years, and they are now the most common sexually transmitted disease - it is possible to become infected not only through sexual contact, but also by simply touching or using an infected towel or underwear. They are highly infectious and more likely to affect men but affect both sexes. In men they are most common in the glans, penile skin, and foreskin, in women in the labia, vulva, vagina and cervix, and in both sexes in the anal area or in the oral cavity in the case of oral infection.
If condylomata are present (or suspected), you must see a doctor as soon as possible and avoid sexual intercourse and shaving in the area where they are found. It is certainly not advisable to postpone a visit to the doctor, as condylomata can spread rapidly and pose a risk of cancer.
They are most often diagnosed visually – by the naked eye and colposcopy. Diagnosis is usually confirmed by biopsy, i.e. a small tissue sample. This also determines whether the wart is a precancerous condition or a tumour as such. It is also considered important to examine and treat the patient’s sexual partner.
Treatment depends on the severity of the infection, where the warts are located, their quantity, and appearance. Different removal methods are used, and sometimes they are combined. The aim of treatment is to remove as many as possible.
At our clinic, we use the electrocoagulation method, which consists of removing skin tissue with an electrocoagulator. After removal, the wound usually does not bleed and there is no need for sutures. Electrocoagulation has the best results of all possible treatment methods and the lowest risk of recurrence.
