Circumcision – partial or complete foreskin removal
Circumcision is the surgical removal of part or all of the foreskin of the penis. This procedure is most often carried out on children for medical reasons such as phimosis (tight foreskin) associated with repeated inflammation of the foreskin or where the foreskin is affected by chronic scarring. The procedure may also be carried out at the request of a child’s parents for cultural or religious reasons. Removal of the foreskin will result in life-long partial or complete exposure of the glans (head) of the penis.
Congenital narrowing of the foreskin, scarring of the foreskin due to repeated inflammation.
Inability to pull back the foreskin, foreskin scarring, repeated swelling, pain and redness of the foreskin.
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia in a supine position and takes 30-40 minutes. The foreskin can be shortened (partial circumcision) or completely removed (complete circumcision). The surgeon stitches the edges around the glans with individual absorbable sutures that usually fall out within three weeks after the procedure.
