Hydrocele removal
It is the removal of accumulated fluid from the sac around the testicles (hydrocele or water hernia). This condition can cause a child discomfort or cosmetic difficulties.
A hydrocele can have various causes such as inflammation of the testicle or the epididymis, an injury or congenital factors. In prepubescent boys, it is usually the result of a persistent connection between the scrotum and the abdominal cavity through which fluid penetrates the scrotum.
It causes an enlargement of the scrotum. Parents or the patient himself may feel a smooth, painless lump of an indeterminate size in the scrotum. The size of a hydrocele may fluctuate during the day. Patients sometimes report a feeling of heaviness and discomfort in the scrotum.
The operation is performed on children under general anaesthesia in a supine position and takes around 40 minutes. For a prepubescent patient, a hydrocele operation begins with an incision in the groin, through which the persistent connection to the abdominal cavity is broken. The scrotum is then opened to drain the accumulated fluid. After puberty, the surgical procedure is the same as for adults. The surgeon makes an incision in the scrotum to reach the testicle, drains the accumulated fluid and adjusts the testicular membrane so that fluid can be absorbed properly into the surrounding tissue. Sometimes it is necessary to insert a surgical drain into an affected testicle. The wound is closed with an absorbable suture.
