Meatotomy/meatoplasty
It is the enlargement or remodelling of the opening of the urinary tract (meatus) at the head of the penis.
Narrowing is usually the result of chronic inflammation of the glans, or the urinary tract may open in the wrong place due to a congenital defect.
The opening of the urinary tract is very narrow and it is difficult for the patient to urinate. There is a birth defect called hypospadias in which the urinary tract opens on the underside of the glans.
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia and takes about 20 minutes. During the procedure, the edge of the narrowed opening is cut and sewn in place with very fine individual absorbable sutures. A displaced opening requires complex plastic surgery to ensure a better cosmetic appearance of the glans. In some cases, a catheter may have to be inserted into the bladder for a day after the procedure.
